Whoe Knows...
Hey Family,
Lifes good here in Portugal and now i can say that i survuved my first transfer as a snior companion/greenie breaker/white-washing missionary. This transfer is finally over but we have no idea whats going to happen next. We figure that both of us will stay but when i talked to Elder Wilson last week after the transfer meeting he had with President, he said that transfers were 95% different than he had imagined. So that means we could be getting some interesting news. Who knows...
Anyway, this week was pretty good. We didn´t mark anyone for baptism so that was kind of depressing but we did find some new people. The only problem is that the people we have been finding start running from us soon after. Maybe they aren´t but sometimes it sure seems that way when they dont pick up their phone or answer their door. But we worked more with our members this week and they gave us some really good references. Well, one member did, our ward mission leader. He´s brazilian so that pretty much means he´s one of the coolest people ever, especially when it comes to doing missionary work. But all in all, looking back over this transfer, i feel pretty good about what we´ve done in this area. When we showed up, we had pretty much nothing to work with, but now, we´re making big baptismal goals. In fact, we told some members that fed us lunch yesterday our goal for baptisms for next month and they looked at us like we were crazy. But in my opinion, thats a good thing.
But as far as our plans go, we´re planning on marking a ton of people for baptism this week so things will be looking up.
In other news, Elder Jones came back to Portugal with his family this week to visit and showed up to our chapel yesterday. He ended his mission last transfer and ended up coming back to visit with his mom and sister. It was great seeing him again and talking about the area and stuff. He served here about a year ago and loved it (he served with Elder Silva here and they baptized like crazy). The members were all blown away when he showed up and it was funny to hear so many portuguese people trying to speak english. I took some more phots with Elder Jones and Elder Dalton so maybe if i have time i´ll send those home. But i have to say i was feeling a little trunkey seeing one of my companions with his family and also knowing that i´ll be hitting my year mark pretty soon. But i´m not focusing on it too much.
I also found out this wek that one of the member in this ward lived in Idaho Falls for a few years before becoming a member of the church. She went to the US to study in San Diego, but the family she was going to stay with moved to Idaho Falls. A little while later this member was baptized because this family introduced her to the church and she eventually moved back here to Portugal. She said the name of the family was Cox or Perry. Most of the family died in the incident of September 11th so i´m not sure if we knew them or not. But when she saw pictures of the 4th of July parade she showed here husband and kids and told thatshe played in the band in the parade. She also tried to secribe to them what a snowcone was but i´m not sure the family got it. She also kept talking about how she wanted to go back. I guess she really liek those snow cones.
Also, me and Elder Dalton showed our pictures of our families to two investigators this week and both want some puppies from Spencer and Brianna. They could make a fortune selling those puppies over here! And one of the investigators also wanted you guys to send Mikey over here too.
Oh, and Elder Wilson just called me and said that me and Elder Dalton are staying together for one more transfer here in Setúbal. Thats good because we both wanted to see the people that we´ve foudn get baptized.
But back to what i was saying...i cant believe Mikey doesnt like the thought of a jeep! That blows my mind cause i´d kill to drive that thing! I´d probably call it "Augy" though cause thats the name of the eagle mascot for Benfica! But Scarlet´s a good name too.
And yes, the Elders before us trasher our house and as far as i know that doesnt happen all too often. So i think we just got dumped on.
Well, i think thats about it for news. Thanks for all the love and prayers. Eu amo-os!

P.S. i almost forgot, i was at a members house last week and i saw that L.L. Cool J. has a new T.V. show. What´s with that?

My House...
One-on-One
Hey Family,
Sounds like everybvody is doing well back in the states, which is good because i´m still surviving out here in the mission field.
This week was pretty hectic but at least i can say it wasn´t my fault though. Let me explain...
Like i said last week, we were supposed to have interviews on thursday, but on tuesday in our district meeting, we found out that president had moved them to the next monday, which would have been today. Everybody was complaining because monday is P-day but i was used havinig P-days swapped for meetings because i was isolated in the Algarve for 5 months. But later that day, we found out that president had another change of mind. While me and Elder Dalton were in a meeting with one of the counclers in the bishopric, we got a call(at 10:00 p.m.) that told us that interviews were going to be the next day and that we needed to cancel our all our plans. Needless to say, i had a bit of a headache that night because we had a lesson with an investigator who we were going to mark for baptism (but dont worry, we talked to her and shes pryaing about her baptismal date this week!).
But interviews actually went really well. Elder Dalton got interviewed before me and had a great interview. President told him he was going to be a great missionary and some other really good stuff, instead of "faca" like we thought. Then it was my turn...
I went in and sat down and expected to get torn apart. When he asked me how my mission was going i immediatly started explaining about the area and what we had done in the past 4 weeks thinking maybe i could dampen his fury a good explanation. I wasn´t making excuses, but i found that i started giving myself "faca" and pretty much called myself to repentance during my own interview. Then afterward i waited for Predident Torgan´s response. Surprisingly, he didn´t give me "faca" at all, but gave the opposite. He told me how when he and Irmã Torgan talk about the missionaries in the mission the talk about them as if they were their children. And then he said that when they talk about me, they agree that i need to be happier. At this point was a little puzzled because i thought i was happy, but then he continued. He reminded me of a story he told in Our zone conference early this transfer about we Enoch saw a vision of all of Heavenly Father´s creations. He used this story to mtivate us to reach our goals by explaining that every number was a child of our Heavenly Father. He read the vision that Enoch had and described how Heavenly Father cried because so many of his children woulndn´t be saved and told us that we should work as hard as we can so that he wont have to cry over his lost children. Then, after reminding me of this story, he told me that after that point in the vision Heavenly Father said it was time to rejoice and be happy and to stop crying(or something like that). Then he applied that to me and said that even after all the saddness God had had, he still said there was a time to be happy. So i guess i need to be happier then!
He then told me a little parable to tell all the investigators that come to church but dont want to be taught, and then told me to relay it to them.I also apologized in my interview because i knew i could have done more to help this area grow, but i promised i would try my best in the future. He then told me that he knew that i would try AND do my best in the future. He also said that i had honored his love and trust. So Elder Dalton may have had a really good interview, maybe better than mine, but i still felt good coming out of my one-on-one with President Torgan.
In other news, you can tell Warren that i ate sushi a few weeks ago and i enjoyed it. You can also tell Mikey that Portugal is planning on losing to Brazil in the World Cup game they´re going to have next month too.
And i cant believe you guys are going to buy Mikey andother car! Didnt you guys see what he did with mine!? But i have to say it is a good looking jeep, too bad i´m never going to see it or drive it...
Can´t wait to read Mindy´s blog to see what lies she´s been telling about me. And by the way, if its possible i would like to get a copy of Mindy´s Rat Story. I´ve heard so much about it and i´m wondering how it is.
Also, if it is in any way possible, to get deoderant and alergy meds. I´m out of both and my Alergies seem to be worse in Portugal!
Well, i think thats it for news here. Thanks for everything! Eu amo-os!

Dropping the Ball
Hey Family,
It was great talking to everyone yesterday and the amazing thing is, i still have stuff to day ion my email!
This week was really good. We´ve taught more lessons than we ever have here, had more investigators in church than we´ve ever had, and found more new people to teach so in those aspects it was a great week. And we even had someone we found come to church and to the President Torgan Fireside too so that was great.
But i better start from the beginning of the week so i dont get lost. The week started as usual and then slowed down but picked up near the end of the week. We also foudn time to play basketball with some members too. We had planned on playing with investigators but then the some members found out and decided to come too. The only problem was that we didnt have any investigators show up. The members didnt seem to notice because they started to play anyway so we jumped in for a game. It was pretty fun but not a lot of people were there. But there was one member who showed up who everyone said was amazing and we played for a bit with him and it was fun. I think people talked him up too much because me and the member that was on my team beat him and Elder Dalton. It was a close game and afterward this member told me in english,"I hate your shooting!"
We also went to a part member family´s house that night and ate dinner with them. They were the ones who made fun of my graduation picture. But dont let that fool you because they love us to death. Everytime we go over there the feed us really good food and then afterward they send us home with a huge sack full of food just to make sure we dont go hungry. And this week the non-member husband gave me a present before we left too. The last time we had gone to theior house i told him i was a fan of Benfica, a soccer team here in portugal, which he happens to a fan of too. So while we are talking and showing pictures of family and stuff, this guy leaves and then comes back and lays a old, tattered scarf in front of me and tells me he wants me to take it home so i can show everyone. Not knowing what he was talking about i open the folded scarf to reveal that its a benfica scarf! I had been planning on buying one before leaving the country but then he just gives me his. I told him i couldn´t take it but he insisted so now i have a start to my benfica fan wear. Right now its sitting on my desk because it looks as though it has seen quite a few benfica games and probably has been drenched in both beer and tears. Its priceless!
But back to yesterday. When i hung up the phone Elder Dalton told me he had talked to President Torgan and had told him we 15 investigators in church but also said how none were marked for baptism. That was a mistake. President Torgan then gave Elder Dalton "faca" because we hadn´t even taught some of these people. Luckly, i was on the phone with you guys so i didn´t get yelled at but we have interviews thins week so i know i get hear about it then. But by the time i hung up the meetign was about to start so i hurried down stairs and sat down next to an investigator right before the meeting started. The Fireside started with some members giving short stories and testimonies about the Plan of Salvation because the topic of the fireside was "Life after Death". Then President Torgan got up and before starting his talk, he said a few things about Setúbal. Both Wards in Setúbal were there so the place was a little packed. He talked about how our ward had a great bishop and some great ward leaders and then talked about us as the missionaries in the ward. He said that me and Elder Dalton were incredible missionaries and that we are two of the best missionaries in the mission AND that the ward should use us and enjoy us while they can. Then pausing for a moment found me in the crowd and looked me in the eyes and said, "Dont make me a liar." Imediatly a memeber from the other ward who was sitting infront of us turned around and said in english, "Dont drop the ball!" Talk about pressure. Then after that he said that the other ward had good missionaries too. Needless to say i feel a little more pressure now but thats probably a good thing because it will probably make me work that much harder. We´ll just see how it goes though.
As for the Box...
the only other thing i could think of that you guys could send would be fruity candy. Elder Dalton just got a box full of mambas and stuff like that which looked pretty good so if i had to make a choice as to what would be in the box, that would be it.
Other than that i dont know what else to say. Life is hectic, nerve racking, and at times, a little crazy but thats normal now. We´re having fun and working hard.
Oh! and i forgot to tell Mom that President Torgan told us to thank our moms for him, for the support they have given to the missionaries and the mission. So thanks Mom!
Well, i better get going. Thanks for all the love and support. Eu amo-os!

"Blind-Sided"
Hey family,
This week we didn´t see much change in our area but it was still a pretty good week.
On Monday we played basketball with a kid from Bulgaria who doesn´t speak any portuguese. He´s an investigator who we found in our first week here and found out he likes basketball, which is good because our church just happens to have basketball courts. We found his family knocking doors and at first thought they were from bolivia, because the daughter in the family is the only one that spoke to us and she only speaks a little portuguese. She speaks alot of spanish though because she lived ion spain for 10 years. But like i said, we thought they were form bolivia because they spoke spanish and when we asked them where they were from they said bulgaria but not very clearly. I thought they said bulgaria but Elder Dalton was sure they said bolivia so we went with that. Last week we actually taught his family with a member who speaks spanish and who just went to California to live there for the rest of his life so know we have to find someone else to go with us. We can communicate "mais ou menos" but we dont think they understand very well. We´ll just have to see what happens.
Then on Tuesday, the "Highlight" of the week happened. Normally on tuesday nights the bishop meets with the ward mission leader and his counselor and some other people and they go over the stuff that we have been doing and other ward business. The last dupla of missionaries never really went to that meeting but they like us to show up anyway. We´ve only been to two of these meetings however because last week our ward missiona leader didnt tell us to show up...so we didnt. But this week he told us to be there so we showed up, but we werent ready for what happened.
The meeting started well. We went down the list of people they gave us and talked about what we had done with each person. Some of the people having been running from us and others have proven to be hard to get a hold of, so i Bishop called a few people for us and the ones that gave us excuses, gave him excuses. Then, after talking about everyone, the council seemed to be satisfied with the work two young, white washing missionaires had done. But, we were wrong.
After discussing the "To Do List" the bishop asked us if we had found anyone new yet. We then started to talk about the Brazilian lady that we found. Then, right in the middle of our explanation the bishop interjected and preceded to go on a rant of how we weren´t working inteliigently and how we needed to us our heads. He went off for about 15 minutes and torn into us for a bit before we were saved by the fact we had to go talk to someone to mark an appointment with an investigator. We think he was trying to give us advice but the way he gave us the advice didnt sound so nice. We kind of left with a bad taste in our mouth but we´re over it now. Besides, the bishop was extra nice to us yesterday so i think we´re good now.
I dont have much time so on to the phone call.
Our number is: *** *** ***
It would be best if you called at 9.
Sorry i got to go. I´m out of time. I love you guys!

We think he was trying to give us advice but the way he gave us the advice didnt sound so nice. We kind of left with a bad taste in our mouth but we´re over it now. Besides, the bishop was extra nice to us yesterday so i think we´re good now.
I dont have much time so on to the phone call.
